The state of Tennessee has enacted a new concussion awareness law. The law is designed to inform and educate parents, coaches and administrators that are involved in youth activities and athletics about the nature, risk and symptoms of concussion and head injuries. All parents, coaches and administrators of team sports and recreation activities are now required to sign a Tennessee Concussion Statement. The recreation department is taking steps to ensure that we comply with the new law. During the upcoming sports seasons and recreation programs such as Commons Camp you will be asked to read and sign off on a concussion fact sheet. Our coaches and administrators will be asked to sign off on an additional form that lays out regulations and guidelines to follow in case of a concussion occurrence. In some cases the coaches will be asked to go to the Center for Disease Control and take a free online concussion course. For more information on the new law visit the www.cdc.gov/ConcussionInYouthSports or you can google Tennessee Concussion Law. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
